Windsor, ON – Williams Convenience store in Windsor’s east-end has announced that at the end of 2023 they will be removing their take-a-penny/leave-a-penny tray that has been a fixture beside the cash-register since 1978. “It’s time to move on” said store manager Gabe Whitehead.
Mr. Whitehead explained the decision making process behind the removal “No one seems to be using it any more. In fact some of the pennies haven’t been touched in close to five years. Two of the pennies are actually stuck to the plastic. So I think it is time to retire the tray.”
The store manager struggled when attempting to figure out the lack of penny-traffic “I’ve been working here for a long time and I can tell you that the tray got used constantly then suddenly about nine or ten years ago people stopped using it. I’m assuming that’s because almost everyone pays with debit cards now. That can be the only logical explanation as to why people don’t need an extra penny from time to time.”
